Van Nuys Real Estate
Van Nuys real estate was once the center of the San Fernando Valley’s agricultural industry. In 1869, newcomer Isaac Lankershim recognized that the fertile lands lying just over the Cahuenga Pass from the city of Los Angeles would support many crops. He and his friend, Isaac Van Nuys, who was of Dutch descent, purchased the entire southern half of the San Fernando Valley – about 59,500 acres – for $115,000, and planted wheat. Thus was sown Van Nuys real estate as a bountiful agricultural industry.
Between February and December 1911, a group called the Los Angeles Suburban Home Association bought Mr. Van Nuys out of his Van Nuys real estate and prepared to “sell” the San Fernando Valley. They touted the new Van Nuys real estate as “The Town That Started Right”. They plotted set-asides for a high school and commitments to build important buildings “first”, including the Bank of Van Nuys, in order to give land buyers the sense that if they purchased Van Nuys homes for sale it would bloom into a city.
William Whitsett bought a half-interest in the Van Nuys real estate townsite and his influence grew as he oversaw the second great aqueduct that boosted Los Angeles’ position in the 1930’s. The San Fernando Valley was beginning to be known as “America’s Suburb” during this time when the GI’s from World War II were demobilized and many came west and Van Nuys real estate went through a tremendous boom.
“America’s Suburb” had its own cultural institution – Wednesday night “cruising” on Van Nuys Boulevard. Thousands of teenagers and their rebuilt 1940’s and 1950’s cars would flood the Boulevard every Wednesday night and it became somewhat of a “rite of passage for any Valley teenager inhabiting Van Nuys real estate. The San Fernando Valley car culture – along with many middle class jobs –left when General Motors closed its assembly plant in 1992.
Van Nuys real estate functions similar to a “county seat” for the San Fernando Valley. Its Government Center, on the Erwin Street mall contains a branch of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, the Van Nuys police station, the Van Nuys offices for Los Angeles City Hall and a branch of the Los Angeles Public Library.
Today Van Nuys real estate hosts one of the busiest small airports in the world. Hollywood celebrities, politicians, and business executives are known to use this airport because it offers them convenience and the anonymity many of them seek.
